Mozart's birthplace and residence in Salzburg

Walk in the footsteps of Salzburg’s most famous son who was born in 1726 in the house at Getreidegasse, Number 9. Today the former Mozart family home in Salzburg contains a museum where Mozart’s childhood violin, clavichord, letters and documents are among the many items to view. Each year millions of visitors from all over the world visit this memorial to a musical genius in order to get a glimpse into the life of this child prodigy.

During the years 1773 – 1789, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived in a house on the Makartplatz square in Salzburg. Today, this building houses an interesting exhibit about Mozart, his parents and his siblings. Mozart’s family found it necessary to move to these new quarters because they needed the space to receive their many friends and fellow musicians. During his years in this house Mozart wrote many symphonies, divertimenti, serenades, piano and violin concerti, as well as a bassoon concerto, several arias, masses and other sacred music. After being largely destroyed by bombs during World War II, the building was reconstructed according to its original plans and today contains a charming café.
