Christmas markets in Salzburg
Advent fairs in Grödig, St. Leonhard and the historic city center of Salzburg
The villages around Salzburg have a special nostalgia for the Christmas market tradition, and this certainly is true with Grödig at the Untersberg. Since 1973, visitors have been gathering around the St. Leonhard church and enjoying an especially beautiful Christmas market, complete with hand-made crafts from Austria, Bavaria and South Tyrol. Everywhere there is the sweet smell of roasted almonds and hot punch, which does more than just warm your hands! Here you will find Christmas decorations, children’s toys and tasty foods, as well as carved items and Christmas cookies.
Especially well known is the large Christmas market in Salzburg with the city’s cathedral as its impressive backdrop. Those who are willing to venture a little higher up the mountain can visit the Christmas market in the Hohensalzburg Fortress and enjoy tasty culinary treats along with a magnificent view of Salzburg’s historic old city. The Christmas market at the Hellbrunn Palace in Salzburg, just around the corner from Grödig, offers its guests snacks and handmade gifts. One local secret you won’t want to miss is the Christmas farmer’s market at the Meier-Mellenhof farm in Grödig-Glanegg. The Advent and Christmas seasons in the Salzburg region are attractive, wonderfully delicious, and well worth a visit year after year.
